Both sides had brought a good following with sets of young supporters with their drums, on opposite sides of the stadium. Penybont came into the game confident in getting another win under their belts, and the away support shared this confidence as the game kicked off. There were three changes for the visitors from their midweek cup victory against Afan Lido, with Davies, Jefferies and Liam Sheppard returning for Bont. As for the host, Cardiff Met were unchanged from away draw against Colwyn Bay. Cardiff Met kicked the game off, as most thought it would only be a matter of time until Penybont would start to show their class. Among their players, two ex EFL Championship players, Tyler Walker who most famously played for Nottingham Forest, and Jonathan Leko who played for Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Charlton, among others. Would these players turn out to be key for the visitors? Both teams started quite slowly, not reaching a very high tempo in the first third of the first half. As the first half developed, Penybont enjoyed most of the ball and started creating chances. The first came from the right hand side for Bont, as the ball was passed inside to Walker from the wing, who himself was looking to continue his brilliant form so far this season, but his shot, struck with conviction, hit the side netting. As both teams settled into the game, Cardiff Met were playing positively with a much higher press than expected, as they tried to win the ball in the middle of the park from any mistake or poor touch Penybont made. Penybont were also playing with a reasonably high line of engagement, looking to play balls over the top of the Cardiff Met back four into areas for Walker to chase onto. As the away fans chanted for their team to take the lead, Penybont won a free kick, thirty yards out from goal on the far right hand side. The ball was whipped in with conviction, headed down, and saved by the Cardiff Met goalkeeper. A moment of concern came for the visitors though as Jefferies who had just returned to the starting eleven went down after a late challenge by a Cardiff Met defender. He had to come off, and was replaced by experienced Eduino Vaz. The next chance of the game came again for Penybont. The ball was won in the middle of the pitch after a poor touch from a Cardiff Met midfielder. The ball was then guided out wide to Nathan Wood on the left hand side, who took the ball in his stride and cut inside. From just outside the box, he could see a gap and went for it, placing the shot underneath the keepers right arm to put Bont one goal to the good. With the away support getting louder, Penybont had another chance just a minute later. The ball was fizzled down the left to Wood, who had been having an amazing first half, crossed the ball to towards the penalty spot to Mehew, who struck the ball first time past the goalkeeper with intent, to put Penybont further ahead. Penybont stayed on top and had and looked to extend their lead even further. A ball was played down the right by the visitors, passed inside to Tyler Walker who had dropped deep to receive the ball. Walker played a pass and made a run in behind where he got on the end of the resulting through ball, shot near post and put the game to bed after only thirty six minutes. The last action of the first half came from a Cardiff Met corner, the ball was swung in from the right and headed on toward the back post. Unfortunately, nobody was there to head it home and the first half finished with a dominant lead for Bont.

Penybont kicked off the second half looking to pick up from where they left off in the first half. The game started with both teams opening up a bit more, allowing each other to enjoy periods with the ball. Woods good performance up till now was only getting better but Cardiff Met had the first clear chance of the second half. Mwandwe came down the left for the hosts, dribbled past two defenders and entered the penalty box. As he danced into the box, Sheppard put out a leg in a last ditch tackle to try and win the ball, and caught Mwandwe who went down. Cardiff Met were sure the referee would give them a penalty, but the game resumed with no such decision. After this chance, a disheartened Cardiff Met could not get a touch of the ball as Penybont, roared on by their travelling young fans, cheered them on. The next chance of the game came from a quick counter attack from Penybont. A Cardiff Met centre back stepped out of line looking to tackle the ball, but instead opened a space in behind for Tom Mehew to exploit. The ball was played to him and he confidently placed it into the bottom left corner to get his second of the afternoon. Only a couple of minutes later Penybont were back on the attack as a ball down the left this time reached Nathan Wood who played the ball into the middle to Tom Mehew, who smashed the ball past the goalkeeper for Penybont’s fifth of the afternoon, completing Mehew’s hattrick. With result decided, Cardiff Met tried to get whatever might be left of the game, as they enjoyed most of the ball. With substitutions for both sides in the offing, most notably Jonathan Leko for Penybont, Cardiff Met won a free kick inside the Penybont third. The ball was crossed in and headed across the face of goal, but nobody was there to finish it for the hosts. With a few minutes of the game remaining it has already fizzled out, as both teams knew their fate. The game ended with the Penybont away support cheering and Penybont earing a vital three point to cement themselves third in the Cymru Premier Table.

Full Time – Cardiff Met FC 0 – 5 Penybont FC

On a brisk Saturday afternoon Cardiff Met looked for an unlikely home win against a Penybont side who had been enjoying a great start to the season, sitting third in the Cymru Premier table.
