This was a battle at the survival end of the Cymru North. A newly rejuvinatyed Guilsfield had lost only one out of the last six. Llay, rooted in relegation, had only one win in the same period and needed to kick start their campaign. This had started with a notable 3-2 win over Denbigh.
Guilsfield started well and used their left wing to full advantage, with Jamie Hyne excelling. Smallwood caused lots of issues in attack. Llay utilised their right wing with Teixera and Kamilo trying to feed Collo in the box.
It was Guilsfield who took the lead, a LLay chance was cleared with a sweeping ball that saw Hyne run onto down the left flank. His square ball was met by Bromley, who fired a rocket into the goal. (10)
Guilsfield dominated the first half and most of the play was in the Llay half, with a lot of clearances being mopped up at the centre circle to be launched back into the LLay box. On 27 minutes, a cross was blocked by a defender’s leg, wrong footing keeper Platt and rolling towards Smallwood, who just had to tap in the ball.
Llay survived until half time. They began well, now with the wind at their backs. Guilsfield’s first attack back won them a few corners. The second of these was beautifully placed by Smallwood, for Bromley to head into the top cormer.
Llay picked up their play and dominated midfield, but could not convert any chances. On the hour mark, Haycock broke clear for Guilsfield and drove down to the byline, to turn, flick past the defender and hit it in the bottom corner for 4-0.
Towards the end of the game, Guilsfield made good of all their work, as LLay were worn down. In the 85th minute, a break down the right, was flicked into Smallwood who created enough space to fire in goal number 5.
Llay salvaged a consolation, when a cross into the box was not dealt with enough and Kamilo scrambled the ball home.
In injury time (93), Haycock rounded off the rout, with a driven shot past the keeper and the game was over. Guilsfield going into the festive season on a high, whereas Llay left asking many questions of themselves as they prepare for their next game
Our POTM was James Smallwood. A player we have seen over the years at other clubs, today he showed his ability, causing problems for Llay all game.
