Our final Player In Focus of 2025, and we’re focusing on a player who has a lot of potential, as do several players in CPDM Bangor’s squad.
However, like last season they’re struggling at the wrong end of the Genero Adran North table, and will be looking for an upturn in form in the new year.
What’s key for Bangor though, is it’s a group who have so much room to improve and become a top side. They’ve shown glimpses of that at the start of this season, it’s just about showing it more consistently, and realising that potential in the squad.
A player who has been there throughout is Mia Roberts. A talented attacking midfielder who won promotion with Bangor to the Adran Leagues in 2023. Not always involved in the goals, but playing a key role both on and off the ball throughout games, both on the wing but also in a more central role. A player with incredible flair and dribbling ability. It’s why she’s been a regular starter for many years.
Spending her youth football days in North Wales, including Cemaes Bay, Llannerchymedd and Bangor City, Roberts’ final season in that chapter would be with Penrhyn Bay.
At Penrhyn, she was playing along current tier two stars Polly Wild-McGregor, Erin Doran, Sophie Rawling, Fleur Custance, current Bangor teammate Ella Jones, and former Pontypridd United and Adran South title winner, Maddie Williams.
A talented team, who went all the way to the FAW Girls Cup Final in 2020, narrowly defeated 4-3 by an equally strong Barry Town United side.
Beginning 2021/22 with Penrhyn Bay, Mia Roberts would then make the move to CPDM Bangor, who were pushing for tier two football.
Making her debut against Llangefni Town in November, Roberts went on to make 12 appearances in her first senior season, scoring twice and assisting five times.
Bangor finished 2nd in the North Wales Women’s League, just missing out on promotion to CPD Y Rhyl 1879.
The best season yet in 2022/23 for Roberts and CPDM Bangor. They went unbeaten in the North Wales League, winning the division by seven points, and earning that promotion to the Genero Adran North.
It was also a breakthrough season for Roberts, contributing to 24 goals throughout the campaign, with only North Wales renowned Stevie Donougher bettering that.
The end of that season also saw Roberts called up to her first Island Games, with Ynys Môn (Anglesey)
The team made history in Guernsey, by finishing 5th in the women’s football competition, which was their best ever finish. A group that has only continued to improve, they finished 5th again this year in Orkney.
Roberts told Cymru Sport: “I’m enjoying every experience with Ynys Môn.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities alongside a great group.”
A brief spell with Amlwch Town followed for Roberts before returning to CPDM Bangor in the Adran North, and earning Manager’s Player of the Season after impressing once again back at Bangor.
Whilst they have avoided relegation in their first two seasons of tier two football, which of course will be the priority in the short-term, last season won’t have gone completely how Bangor would’ve wanted, with two 7th place finishes since stepping up to the league. This season has also seen a recent difficult run of results.
However, what’s positive like mentioned at the start of this thread, is a young group of players continue to improve and learn together, and as long as they can continue stability in tier two, it may not be a bad thing in the long run.
Roberts continues to be a regular feature for CPDM Bangor. Key to creating space for players to overlap into, and being a creative spark herself, and a player who has matured over the seasons gone. She’s also an integral part of Bangor University during the week, who play in BUCS competition.
She said on her time at CPDM Bangor so far: “I love playing for Bangor. I’ve had so many good times here and I’ve learnt a lot along the way.
“The club is in such a good place, and I’m looking forward to moving forward together and seeing what we can achieve.”
