Flint Town United have been on a rapid rise in their women’s and girls section. Having formed in 2022, the senior side were promoted in 2024 to the Genero Adran Leagues, and are now a contender at the top of the Genero Adran North. The U17s side were formed soon after Flint’s promotion, and fast forward to 2026, Flint Town United Girls U13s and U14s will compete in their first season at the football club.
Increasing the pathway for girls football at Flint, the U14s coach have transitioned across from AFC Flint. Alongside Darren Prior, Lee Hastings and James Antrobus, Flint Town United senior player Becca Hughes coaches the team.
Making the announcement in April of their move to the club, the U14s had a strong pre-season, and it’s already showing in the North East Wales Girls League, with Flint having two wins from two so far in 2026/27.
For the U13s, they’re a brand new team. Coached by Leigh Howat, Gareth Davies and Rhys Pennington, the team have already won early season silverware in summer tournaments, and have competed in friendlies against the likes of Lex XI, Penrhyn Bay and AFC Flint Boys.
A focus around team spirit from the moment the team was created, Flint have gone from having five players in June to 14 now being signed on. The U13s also have two wins from two in the North East Red League, and have progressed in the first round of the League Cup.
Speaking on the progress of the U13s side, Leigh Howat said: “Even though the structure is grassroots, the standards at Flint Town United remain very high, training twice a week and working on fitness and technical details, and building team bonds and friendships.
“We have our own YouTube channel and upload videos to use to analyse post training with a keen group of girls who relish the opportunity to have a bit of fun and also understand the game from a different perspective. We are finding these sessions to be invaluable in the early phases, providing valuable insight into the bigger picture.
“Setting up new teams at a new club isn’t easy and requires a lot of hard work from many people, and local businesses supporting with sponsorships, without this it simply wouldn’t be possible.
“We as a club have got ourselves as best prepared as possible and feel excited, hopeful and anxious all at the same time but cannot wait for this new and exciting chapter ahead.”
The success of the U17s in the past two years has seen first team promotions, with Neve Richards and Olivia England making the step up to the senior team earlier this summer.
With the introduction of further teams at the Essity Stadium, the hope for Flint will be that homegrown talent becomes a regular theme in the Genero Adran Leagues in the not too distant future.
During the summer, Cymru Sport announced a kit sponsorship with Flint Town United in the Genero Adran North, and in recent months have aimed to play a small part in sharing the success stories of the women’s and girls’ section. As the club continue to develop, it would be no surprise to see more of those this season.
