We’re back for our first Big Preview of 2026, and the year begins with a heavyweight title clash in the Genero Adran Premier, a Bute Energy Welsh Cup quarter-final spot up for grabs in North Wales, and a key fixture amongst the South Wales League pyramid.
A matchday full of what’s set to be close encounters. In fact, the first weekend of Adran Premier matches of the new year will see teams right next to each other in the table matchup. 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, 5th vs 6th…. you get the idea!
Action also resumes in the SWWGL across all four divisions, with South Wales clubs also in action in the Hugh James SWFA Cup Round Three, and one tie in the Alun Evans League Cup. There is also one game to be played in the North East Wales Development League, one in the Central Wales North League, and as mentioned above, a big Welsh Cup tie.
Some statement results and performances could unfold. A deep dive into those games below.
Aberystwyth Town vs Briton Ferry Llansawel (Live Commentary on Cymru Sport)

Kick-Off – 2pm
Beginning with our live commentary game of Sunday’s fixtures, in a key clash in the top four race, as 5th placed Briton Ferry Llansawel travel to 6th placed Aberystwyth Town, in a 2pm kickoff at Park Avenue.
A recent run of four wins in all competitions, with clean sheets in all of those games, means Ferry come into this game with momentum, after a relatively inconsistent start to the campaign. Whilst two of those wins were against teams in leagues below, building a run of wins is key for a Ferry side chasing The New Saints for a spot in the top four.
The home side Aberystwyth are also still in with a mathematical chance of top four but will have to win their remaining three games of Phase One to have any chance of that, with one of those games coming against the 4th placed TNS.
They come into this game on the back of two positive performances against league leaders Wrexham, in the league and the Genero Adran Trophy. Despite coming out on the losing side across the two fixtures, they pushed a side who have dominated teams week in, week out, all the way both times.
Rhys Jon James’ side won this contest earlier on in the season, with an incredible 3-2 comeback win, inspired by hattrick hero on the day Carys Bufton. Jade Crofts and Megan Kearle originally put Briton Ferry ahead in that game at The Renewable Centre Stadium, but Aber’s comeback contributed to early season defensive problems for Ferry.
However, the last time the travelling Ferry came to Park Avenue, it was a brilliant day for a side making their return to Cymru’s topflight in September 2024. Goalless at halftime, Maia Owen introduced herself to the league with the opening goal, before Alison Walkley-Witts, Jess Denscombe and Fleur Jenkins all scored in a 4-0 win for the newly promoted side.
Both sides have completely changed since that game though, with many of those names mentioned for Ferry either no longer with the club or unavailable for the game.

Cardiff City vs Wrexham AFC

Kick-Off – 5:10pm
Undoubtedly, most eyes will be on the biggest of title race clashes yet, as league leaders Wrexham AFC travel to champions Cardiff City.
A five-point gap becoming eight, at this stage of the season, would be crucial for Wrexham. Even with Cardiff’s game in hand, it becomes such a uphill battle for The Bluebirds. They’ve also not entered Phase Two in any other position than 1st since 2022, with Swansea City winning the Genero Adran Premier that season.
Wrexham were five minutes away from victory against Cardiff City in the reverse fixture at Buckley in October. A finish over the goalkeeper from Katie Barker gave Wrexham the advantage, but a Fiona Barry penalty in the 85th minute meant both sides claimed a point.
The difference this time is Cardiff City have the home crowd behind them, just as Wrexham did in the first fixture, and with a few scares in recent fixtures for the travelling Wrexham, they’ll have to step up their performance to get a result from the game.
Two very close encounters with Aberystwyth Town, and then a tough battle with tier two Penybont in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup. In all three of those games, they ultimately won the games, but it took a while to get there.
It’s also been interesting to see Wrexham’s preparation coming into this game. Lots of rotation in recent Cup fixtures, and a mid-season friendly against FAWNL side Liverpool Feds three days after Christmas.
Both teams have big game players, who performed in the last fixture between these two sides, and they also both now have that depth to become champions. Expect movement in the transfer window from both, but only if it’s the right player, as they’re both past the point of needing significant depth.
With Phase Two around the corner, and this not being the final clash between Cardiff City and Wrexham AFC, a win either way will be a big statement not just in the title race, but ahead of two more games in Phase Two between the two. A chance to change the title picture, but also grab a mentality advantage.
Barry Town United vs Pontypridd United

Kick-Off – 2pm
A game which could be decisive in the relegation picture, as winless Pontypridd United travel to the side directly above them, Barry Town United.
It’s already a ten-point gap for Ponty to climb, and if that became 13 on Sunday with eight games remaining, it would look very likely that their fate will be sealed sooner than later.
This will be Drew Lewis’ first game back in charge of the first team, and whilst a win would be the perfect start to the year, they would need to change what has been another recent run of losses in all competitions.
They had good displays in both Cup competitions, but now they’re out of those, there’s no other distraction positively or negatively, with everything now going into the league for Ponty this season. With TNS and Cardiff City in their remaining Phase One fixtures, this is their only potential opening for points until at least Phase Two.
Barry will be looking to make sure they’re not drafted into a relegation battle by increasing that gap on Sunday. They drew 1-1 to TNS last time out in the Genero Adran Premier. Despite that good result, they’re without a win in four games in all competitions, so will be looking to end that run against Ponty.
It was a dramatic finale to the first fixture between these two sides in this campaign, in what looked like would be Pontypridd’s first league win of the season in October.
Lili Angove gave The Dragons the lead, before Madison Lloyd doubled the advantage with just ten minutes to go. Cue an incredible comeback from the then managerless Barry.
It was the perfect impact from the substitutes that won The Linnets the game. Beca Thomas scored a two-minute brace, before 16-year-old winger Millie Breen, on debut, scored a last-minute winner in what was a vital moment in this season’s bottom four.
That would be Drew Lewis’ final game in charge of his first spell as first team manager, but he returns in the second fixture between the two sides in Phase One on Sunday afternoon.
Swansea City vs The New Saints

Swansea City will be looking to respond in the Genero Adran Premier after their disappointing South Wales Derby result last time out, as The New Saints visit Llandarcy.
A heavy 6-0 defeat to Cardiff City was both a statement win for The Bluebirds, but also an indicator that there is still a long way to go for Yzzy Taylor’s Swans.
Whilst they progressed in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup a week later, that was a game they were expected to win. They face a TNS side looking to take their 3rd spot, so will have to perform to their highest standard to have any chance of claiming a result.
The Saints come into this game on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run, which is credit to the work of interim boss Mike Harris. However, they will be disappointed not to have taken all three points in their last two Genero Adran Premier games.
Drawing 3-3 to Cardiff City having gone 3-1 up, and drawing to Barry Town United 1-1, they’re both games where Harris and his team will feel could’ve been much more in terms of points.
It’s most definitely a much-improved TNS side to the one we saw at the start of the season though. More consistency shown by the Adran Trophy holders, progressing in both Cup competitions in recent weeks, with key players finding form again.
The last fixture between TNS and Swansea ended in a 2-1 victory for the South Wales side, coming from a goal down to win the game.
Summer signing Zara Gibbs opened the scoring for TNS that day, but a free-kick from Chloe Chivers struck Mackenzie Haydn-Jones before going in, and a Stacey John penalty would be enough for Swansea City that day.
Currently a four point gap separates the two sides, with lots at stake both in the race for the top four below, and a chance for TNS to catch the top three.
Bute Energy Welsh Cup: Llandudno vs Wrexham Foresters

Genero Adran North side Llandudno will be looking to avoid becoming the latest Cup upset to tier three Wrexham Foresters, with a place in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup Quarter-Finals up for grabs.
Led by Jay Davies, Llandudno progressed to this stage of the competition with a penalty shootout win over Llangefni Town, also from the league below, so they already haven experience of this type of scenario.
However, that was actually the last game they played, back in November, with other games being postponed between that. A long time without match minutes for a Llandudno side who have been very up and down this season.
They face a Wrexham Foresters side who are yet to lose a game since their formation in the summer. Unbeaten with 83 goals at the top of the newly formed Central Wales North League, and having beaten two Genero Adran North sides already in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup.
Wins against CPDM Y Felinheli and Flint Town United have been statements to the rest of the nation for Foresters, who many are tipping to progress past Llandudno.
A big difference this time though, is that Foresters will be without Player/Manager Kirstie Kural on the pitch. The former Connah’s Quay Nomads midfielder has already scored 40 goals in all competitions this season, including 11 in this competition, but was sent off in the last round against Flint.
They do have quality across the pitch though, and lots of players who can create outside of Kural. Anna Thomas, Laura Tobin, Louise Wilson and Foresters captain Morgan Churchill have all been standouts for the tier three side this season, whilst young winger Savannah Miller is beginning to make a name for herself in North Wales.
Against a Llandudno side with a good mix of experience and young talent, and whilst they’ve shown inconsistency, they’ve had some big results of their own too, notably beating Adran North leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads twice already this season.
Another Welsh Cup tie which will guarantee a team outside the Adran Prem going through to the last eight, and Llandudno will be fully aware of the threat that Wrexham Foresters pose.
Featured Game of the Week: AFC Llwydcoed vs Llangynwyd Rangers
SWWGL Division Two
The Welfare Ground

This week’s featured game comes in tier 5, where 2nd vs 3rd takes place in the South Wales Women’s League Division Two.
Bridgend-based side Llangynwyd Rangers are looking to put the pressure back on league leaders North Cardiff Cosmos (Blue), after a 1-0 defeat against them in their final game of 2025. They travel to AFC Llwydcoed, who themselves are looking to mount a title challenge.
The visitors Llangynwyd won Division Three last season, going unbeaten and winning all 18 league games in their first season after forming, and are looking to go back-to-back this season, and they’ve started incredibly well.
They’re the joint top scorers in the league with league leaders Cosmos with 60 goas this season. Kim Joseph-Alexander has 18 of those, whilst Demi Hurley has been vital on the creative side with 23 goal contributions in the SWWGL this season.
They travel to a Llwydcoed side that they played out a goalless draw with in September, in a tightly contested game, and you can expect a similar theme on Sunday.
The hosts also come into this game on the back of defeat, after a 2-1 loss to Penywaun.
After losing key players in the summer to clubs in the Genero Adran Leagues, having been relegated from SWWGL Division One, they’ve responded positively with promotion back to tier four still a possibility.
Aleksandra Zieba has been the standout, with 13 goals for AFC Llwydcoed this season since joining from Aberaman. Whilst they haven’t scored as many goals as their opponents on Sunday, AFC Llwydcoed have been defensively solid on many occasions this season, conceding just nine times this season in the league, led by skipper Alisha Rawlings at the heart of that, who was one of many to remain at the club after the last campaign.
Like the game earlier in the season, this is set to be another very close game in the race for the SWWGL Division Two title.
