Cymru 3-0 Albania (Cymru win 4-0 on aggregate)

Cymru produced a commanding performance at Parc y Scarlets, beating Albania 3-0 on the night to complete a 4-0 aggregate victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 play-off, writes Steffan Evans.

A record crowd for a women’s match at the stadium watched Rhian Wilkinson’s side control much of the contest, with Mayzee Davies, Elise Hughes and Hannah Cain all finding the net.

Cymru started brightly and created the first clear chance in the sixth minute. Mared Griffiths found space in the Albania box but sent her effort over the crossbar.

Griffiths continued to cause problems down the flank. Her dangerous cross in the 20th minute narrowly evaded her team-mates, while Hughes thought she had doubled Cymru’s lead two minutes later. Her finish was ruled out for offside.

Albania threatened on the counter-attack, with Berisha’s effort deflected behind for a corner in the 25th minute. Captain Megi Doci also tested the Cymru goalkeeper with a free kick, but the hosts dealt comfortably with the danger.

The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute. After her corner was returned, Lilly Woodham delivered a second cross into the area. An attempted clearance fell to Davies, who headed home from close range.

Cymru remained the more dangerous side before the break. Full-back Scarlett Hill helped drive attacks forward, while Davies made important interventions to stop Albania building momentum.

The hosts picked up where they left off after half-time and doubled their lead in the 50th minute. Griffiths beat her full-back once again and sent the ball across the area, where Hughes finished from close range at the near post.

Sophie Ingle came close to adding a third moments later but could not find a way through during a goalmouth scramble. Hughes then tested Albania goalkeeper Rajmonda Spahiu from a tight angle.

Cymru’s third goal arrived in the 62nd minute. Woodham sent a low cross into the area and Cain arrived to finish, scoring her first goal of the night and extending the hosts’ aggregate led to 4-0.

Wilkinson’s side continued to move the ball with confidence as the second half wore on. Angharad James-Turner impressed in midfield, while Albania captain Doci had another effort comfortably dealt with by the Cymru goalkeeper.

Cymru managed the closing stages well after a series of substitutions, seeing out a convincing win and a clean sheet. The result completed a strong two-legged performance and gave the record crowd in Llanelli plenty to celebrate.
